Today’s Writing Tip

Apparently some people don’t read the description before buying a book. This became apparent to me when I got some bad reviews based on complaints related to matters that were clearly explained in the book blurb. That shows the importance of your book cover, which also needs to be an accurate representation of what’s inside.

This is the downside of being a writer, the opposite of the euphoria you feel with a good review. Be prepared for both.

  1. Reviews are strange things. I try to enjoy the good ones and accept the not so good ones after reading them carefully to see whether the reviewer might have a valid criticism. I do like reviews that point out possible weaknesses without letting them taint the whole review. It appears not everyone has learned the “sandwich” critique method of saying something good, then something negative, then something good. The way good teachers respond to students. But then only the best reviewers seem to see themselves as people hoping to help the author grow. I appreciate them.

    • Yes, a bad review got my attention to re-edit my first book for comma usage. The ones that criticize it for something it’s not make me roll my eyes. I cross my fingers that any intelligent people out there reading them will see how irrelevant they are.

      • What do you mean “What?” If you’re referring to “criticized for something it’s not” I’m talking about people who gave my “Lilith: Dark Maid of the Sith” bad reviews when I said in the description that it was the negative side only, plus it was about astrology, not a comprehensive treatise on the myth, much less women’s empowerment. Furthermore, if they want to talk about women’s empowerment, I earned a degree in a man’s field and worked in a man’s job at NASA for over 20 years. I have a whole lot more to say on that topic than any bra-burners out there, believe me. I’ve also gotten mediocre reviews on “Beyond the Hidden Sky” saying it was “good for young adults” when that is who the entire series is targeted toward. Duh.
