This is so true! The longer you can let it sit, the better! When you can see your work objectively as a reader would, you can really get to work editing and polishing the first into the jewel you always imagined.

I schedule a minimum of 2 months between when I actually finish the rough draft and when I do my initial read-through.

Scheduling it in is definitely a good idea! This is where publisher’s deadlines can be a problem.

Which is one reason why I prefer to self publish. That said, I think having initially gone the traditional way was good because I discovered everything involved with that aspect of the business.

So true! What a publisher does in your behalf is a lot, which you have to do yourself or hire out as an Indie.
