Here’s some information on Comet Catalina.

It’ll sweep closest – but not too close – on January 17. Its trajectory suggests it’ll be ejected from our solar system, and we’ll never see this comet again.

  1. It never ceases to amaze me when I hear of ‘new’ comets – when I was a kid, I had the impression that Haley’s Comet was the one and only …. Of course, I sort of thought our little solar system was the entire universe, too.

    • I thought the same thing. Once they took it seriously that an asteroid or comet could collide with Earth and cause a major catastrophe they’ve been watching more carefully, needless to say, and thus find them more often. Having better equipment doesn’t hurt, either.
